Why this service is different
What makes your service different, for me, is the level of improved focus, increased quality and broad spectrum coverage on linking learning and innovation. Needless to say the density of presentation is ideally matched to the target groups. (This is very evident from all your activities).
Strong values and interpersonal skills
What I really valued about working with you, Joy, is that your sense of humour is always present in everything you do. In the world of children you are all there is to be valued because of your attitude and personality towards young people. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well your service transcended the barrier of different cultural orientations. Your values and co values clearly form the foundation for your work, but yet you don’t impose them on anybody. The way minor activities can generate so much discussion shows that they are highly objective. Last but not least, I really value your patience and understanding.
Long-lasting results
I'm delighted to report that most of the theater activities you taught the children here in Nairobi are well remembered and practiced. In fact, when I visited St. Johns out-of-duty I also met them being done and could easily see that they are identical to what you taught in LISP target schools. You have taught me a very feasible way of keeping my lessons lively and participatory. The greatest challenge is to continue exactly the good work you started with the children.

I have had the pleasure of working with Joy on two occasions now at All Nations Christian College. Joy has delivered performing Arts workshops related to specific techniques that could be used by students in a variety of cross cultural mission settings. She has engaged well with our students who range from 21 years upwards. They have found her sessions lively, helpful and encouraging. She has the capacity to communicate well and deliver workshops with clarity but also ease. She has a good sense of humour and is able to build confidence in the students as they participate and experiment with new ideas. It is always a pleasure to work with Joy and I hope that she will continue her link and input at All Nations Christian College.

The issue of rape and defilement is sensitive in the Pumwani villages. It is interesting and encouraging to see the school children expressing themselves openly on the above issue. It goes to show that drama is very effective in bringing about people and especially children to openly express themselves and also sadly goes to show how knowledgeable they are about sexual abuse.

In a classroom setting children would be shy to contribute about this issue [violence against children] but because it was a sort of play they were more free. The quality of the response was better than usual. They learnt a lot.

You were able to find new ways through the project. I thought the way you balanced process and product was really good. You built in a lot of arts and performance learning experiences and always responded to the needs of the children with real sensitivity. I thoroughly enjoyed working with you. I think your work had integrity and provided useful learning in the arts whilst allowing for the development of the whole child.

The rehearsals never felt rushed. Joy handled time well and made sure we were all on task. She worked us hard but it was always enjoyable. The group morale was always high and I personally feel really proud of what I achieved.
